Several news sources reported last week of the plight of the nearly 50 resident Hemingway cats that roam freely on the Ernest Hemingway estate and museum located in Key West, Florida. Of course, you know what a Hemingway cat is? These are those 6-toed cats related to Ernest Hemingway's cat Snowball. The cats living today on the estate are all descendants of this cat.
By all accounts these cats live the life of Garfield. Everything from healthful, organic meals to regular veterinarian check ups and pampering by the museum staff are provided for these lucky kitties. So why are these cats in trouble? It seems after a complaint was filed with Florida animal welfare officials the cats may be subject to laws that would treat them as performers and, therefore, they would required to be caged at the end of the day.
What a shame--a suit currently in the courts will determine the cats fate. The Purveyors of Global Cat Love eagerly await the outcome.
